1. Mr. Ho, 79-year-old

Mr. Ho suffered from Chronic Hepatitis B and was diagnosed to have cirrhosis with ascites two years ago. He once received treatments at the local hospital and Guangzhou Sun Yixian Hospital, during which the ascites were severe, bleeding was found at the varices around the esophagus and below the stomach, the thorax and pericardium had fluid accumulation. He was on several drug therapies but the outcome was unsatisfactory. In June 2001, Vitalliver suppositories were first used. Before the use of the suppositories, the patient weighs 54 kg, with fatigue, bowel swelling, poor appetite, bitter tongue and yellow urination. Liver function tests showed increases in both ALT and AST and albumin level of 32.21 g/L. He was on low-dose oral diuretics. After the use of the suppositories, the patient had increased defecation (3 times per day), which gradually restored to 1-2 times per day, with no abdominal pain; his appetite and mental conditions gradually improved; diuretics were also stopped. After 9 months of treatment, all the symptoms disappeared. His appetite and mental conditions were good. Body weight increased by 5.5 kg. Albumin level rose to 35.04 g/L. Hepatitis B virus antigen-antibody indicators were unchanged before and after the treatment.

2. Ms. Ha, 58-year-old

Ms. Ha was diagnosed to have cirrhosis secondary to Hepatitis B with ascites in 1994 and was once treated at the Guangzhou Medical Affiliated Hospital. Ascites once disappeared but, after discharge, re-appeared with fluid accumulation in the thorax and swellings in the bowel and lower limbs. The treatment with Vitalliver Suppositories was initiated in July 2001. Before that, the patient showed poor appetite, fatigue, low urine output, bowel swelling, reduced body weight, swelling in the lower limbs. She had been administering diuretics like frusemide, dihydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone but the conditions were not improved much. Ultrasound scanning showed severe ascites and spleenomegaly. After 10 days of treatment with Vitalliver Suppositories, the swelling in the bowel was relieved, urine output increased, appetite and mental conditions also improved. So diuretic doses were reduced. After 2 months of treatment ascites disappeared and diuretics were withheld. In the fourth month, due to lack of rest, some minor ascites re-appeared and then disappeared quickly after low-dose diuretics with bed rest. Diuretics were stopped again. Ultrasound scanning in the eighth month showed no ascites. The patient had an increase in body weight by 1 kg and showed improved quality of life: good appetite, mental conditions, physical strength and sleeping. Before the treatment, LFT showed ALT 108 IU/L and AST 159 IU/L. After 8 months of treatment, the results showed ALT 35 IU/L (reference range 5~40); AST 52 IU/L (reference range 5~40). Albumin level showed no significant change before and after treatment. HBV DNA count before treatment was 3.2 x 103 copies/mL; after treatment, the count changed to negative. Hepatitis B virus antigen-antibody indicators were still HBsAg(+) and Anti-HBe(+).

3. Ms. Liang, 75-year-old

Ms. Liang was diagnosed to have Cirrhosis with severe ascites in 2000 but the cause was unknown. She was on long-term diuretic and anti-viral therapies and was also a diabetic. She started the Vitalliver Suppositories in July 2001. Before treatment she had significant bowel swelling, poor appetite, fatigue, swelling in the lower limbs, poor mental conditions, reduced body weight, dry mouth and thirst. After 10 days of treatment, ascites and swellings gradually subsided, diuretic doses were also reduced accordingly. After one month, ascites reduced and swellings in the bowel and lower limbs disappeared. The appetite and mental conditions also improved. After 8 months of treatment, ascites disappeared, patient's appetite was good and water intake reduced.

4. Mr. Chiang, 44-year-old

Mr. Chiang was a civil servant and was first diagnosed to have HBVm(+) on 5 June 1981. He was admitted to hospital on 18 October 2000, after 20 years of liver impairment and splenectomy 3 years before. Treatment was initiated on 25 October. Initial symptoms include: general malaise, dyspnoea on exertion, ascites, pain on defecation, dizziness, frequent bleeding from nasal and buccal cavity. Upon body examinations, it was found that the patient had jaundice, pale look, positive ascites (confirmed by B ultrasound) and spleen removed. After 13 days of medications the patient began to show improved strength and eyesight. On Day 18, his strength and ascites further improved. On Day 21, his conditions significantly improved, without dyspnoea on exertion and bleeding. On Day 27, B ultrasound revealed only a little ascites. On Day 60 belly size reduced from 85cm to 83cm and body weight was 62kg. On Day 68, all the normal body function resumed with good appetite, sleeping and normal excretion. On Day 75, the patient showed good nutritional status. On 23 March 2001, the body weight increased to 63.5kg, belly size 85cm. On 7 April 2001, the patient was discharged, followed by regular visit to outpatient clinic. The B ultrasound carried out on 11 June and 5 August showed no ascites. By now the patient has resumed work as normal and continued medications.

5 Mr. Wong, 24-year-old

Mr. Wong, a Chronic Hepatitis B patient, was diagnosed to have Cirrhosis with ascites 5 months before admission to hospital. Before admission, he was treated at the local county hospital, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated Hospital and West China University of Medical Sciences Affiliated Hospital, during which he suffered from gum and nose bleeding and received multiple drug therapies but the effects were not good. At that time he lost his working ability and felt hopeless about the future. He started using Vitalliver suppositories on 25 October 2000. Before treatment, he weighed 74kg with prominent fatigue, bowel swelling, poor appetite, low urine output, raised LFT (ALT and AST), albumin 32.2g/L, ultrasound scanning showing lots of Ascites, which must be relieved by diuretics. After using the suppositories, the bowel swelling was relieved gradually and the patient's mental conditions and appetite also improved. After one year, the swelling disappeared, mental conditions and appetite were good. The patient could live independently and resumed normal activities and working as a security officer for a bank. He was optimistic about the future and had good physical strength. On follow-up tests, the body weight reduced by 4kg; ultrasound showed no ascites; albumin rose to 37.0g/L, ALT & AST returned back to normal levels; Hepatitis B virus indicators were unchanged before and after treatment.

6 Mr. Lau, 48-year-old

Mr. Lau was diagnosed to have Chronic Hepatitis B, Cirrhosis and Ascites 2 years ago. He was treated in multiple hospitals and was on several drug treatments that did not produce good results. He started using Vitalliver Suppositories on 25 October 2000. Before treatment, he felt fatigue, poor mental condition, looked pale, had bowel and lower limbs swelling and low urine output. Ultrasound scanning showed lots of ascites, which had been controlled by diuretics. 7 Ms. Lau, 66-year-old

Ms. Lau has suffered from Cirrhosis and Ascites for 10 years, during which she received intermittent and multiple treatments, including Chinese and Western medicines, but did not respond well. Before using Vitalliver, she had prominent bowel and face swelling, poor mental condition, ascites and lower limbs edema. Ultrasound scanning showed Cirrhosis with lots of Ascites. On 5 April 2001, she started the Vitalliver therapy. After half a month, her conditions started improving: better mental conditions and appetite, relieved bowel swelling and increase urine output; ultrasound showed minor / medium amount of ascites. 8 Ms. Lei, 50-year-old

Ms. Lei suffered from Chronic Hepatitis B for 6 years and was diagnosed to have Cirrhosis and ascites 2 years ago. In the past 6 years she received intermittent and multiple treatments, including Chinese and Western medicines, but her conditions were not improved, but instead, aggravated.
