Chinese Medicine "Vineuro" Brings Relief for Patients with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia
Professor Kelvin Chan, Director of the Institute for the Advancement
of Chinese Medicine of HKBU, and his research team met the media
on June 23, 2004 to share the research results that showed traditional
Chinese medicine "Vineuro" could help patients suffering from Parkinson's
disease and Dementia.
The findings came a couple of weeks after the death of one of the world's best known Dementia sufferers, former US President Ronald Reagan. Currently, Western medicine used to treat patients with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia has yet to be improved because of poor efficacy and numerous side effects. The diseases seriously affect the daily life of both patients and their families.
In view of this, Professor Chan conducted a pilot clinical study on the therapeutic effects of Chinese medicine on these patients in collaboration with Dr. Laurence Shek, a specialist in internal medicine, and Dr. Eddie Chui, a TCM practitioner in October 2003.
Two groups of patients, nine with Parkinson's disease and five with Dementia,
were given a Chinese medicine "Vineuro" suppository made from a
collection of Chinese herbs such as Radix Ginseng, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum,
Semen Allii Tuberosi, Fructus Evodiae and Rhizoma Kaempferiae while
taking Western medicine simultaneously. Over a period of six months,
their health conditions were monitored by the medical practitioners
together with laboratory tests and measurement of change in quality
of life.
Research results revealed that treatment using "Vineuro" could relieve sufferers' symptoms such as facial dullness, deterioration of memory, slow movement and constipation, and the quality of life of these patients.
